NOMTA Piano Sonata Competition

NOMTA Piano Sonata Competition is happy to announce that our registration is NOW OPEN!

The two-round Competition will take place at Loyola University of New Orleans on Saturday, March 22, 2025. (Deadline: Friday, March 14, 2025)

The Sonata Competition will be a one-day event. There will be two rounds:

1) Preliminary Round – live performance before a judge.

2) Final Round – open recital format. Students will perform in groups, assigned by the difficulty of the repertoire. 

At the end of the Final Round, First, Second and Third Place winners will be selected in each Group. One competition Grand Prize winner will also be selected. The winners will receive monetary prizes: 1st Place – $75, 2nd Place – $50, 3rd Place – $25, One Grand Prize – $100.

All participants will receive a participation certificate and ribbon.

Competition Guidelines:

– Open to any pre-collegiate pianist

– Open to NOMTA teachers as well as to non-members.

– Contestants should prepare and perform without repeats any movement of a sonatina or sonata from all musical periods. Memorization is required. Fast tempo movements are preferred.

There is NO set repertoire list. ATTACHED IS ONLY THE SAMPLE Repertoire List.

The 2024 Sonata Competition was an inspiring event, and we are looking forward to 2025 and hoping that many students will participate! The registration will be open in February 2025.

Presentation and Master Class with Kevin Chance

10 am presentation, followed by coffee break

12 pm-2 pm master class with students



Romantic-Contemporary Auditions

The Romantic-Contemporary Auditions for 2024 are currently cancelled.

Auditions: Saturday, November 4, 2023
Honors Recitals: Sunday, November 5, 2023

DEADLINE: Friday, October 20, 2023

Students are required to prepare one piece from the the Romantic or Contemporary time periods. Each student performs his or her memorized piece for two judges. The judges then provide written feedback in addition to a rating. If a student receives the highest rating, “Superior Recitalist,” from both judges, he or she is invited to play in the winners recital the following day. Students who receive a “Superior Recitalist” rating from one judge and a “Superior” rating from the other judge do not play in the recital but will receive a medal. Students who receive a “Superior” rating from both judges receive a ribbon. All students receive a certificate for participation. This event is open to non-NOMTA members.
